Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new S 450 e Launch Edition at Rs 2.20 Crore (Ex-showroom), introducing the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the iconic S-Class lineup. The flagship luxury sedan combines electric driving capability with the long-distance convenience of a petrol engine, marking a significant milestone in the company’s electrification strategy for the Indian market.
The S 450 e arrives as part of the updated 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class range, which the automaker describes as the most extensively revised S-Class generation to date, featuring over 2,700 new or updated components.
Mercedes-Benz S 450 e Powertrain: Hybrid Performance Meets Luxury
At the heart of the new S 450 e is Mercedes-Benz’s latest 3.0-litre M256 Evo inline-six turbo-petrol engine, engineered to meet Euro 7 emission standards. The engine independently produces 326 hp and 540 Nm of torque.
Complementing the petrol unit is a 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor integrated between the engine and the 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Together, the hybrid system develops a combined output of 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque.
Performance Specifications
- Engine: 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol
- Electric Motor: 120 kW synchronous motor
- Combined Power: 435 hp
- Combined Torque: 680 Nm
- Transmission: 9G-TRONIC automatic
- Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
- 0-100 km/h: 5.7 seconds
- Top Speed: 250 km/h (electronically limited)
Notably, the S 450 e produces more power and torque than the S 450 4MATIC petrol variant, highlighting the performance benefits of hybrid assistance.
115 km Electric-Only Range for Daily Driving
One of the standout features of the Mercedes-Benz S 450 e is its 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which delivers a claimed WLTP-certified electric range of up to 115 kilometres.
For many luxury car owners in urban centres such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, this range could allow daily commuting without using the petrol engine. The vehicle automatically manages transitions between electric and combustion power, aiming to provide a seamless driving experience with minimal disruption to passenger comfort.
For longer intercity journeys, the petrol engine takes over when required, eliminating concerns associated with charging availability and range limitations.
Updated Exterior Design Brings a Fresh S-Class Identity
The latest S-Class receives subtle yet significant design enhancements that modernize its appearance while preserving its flagship luxury sedan character.
Key Exterior Highlights
- New DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with advanced micro-LED technology
- Approximately 40% larger high-beam illumination area
- ULTRA RANGE high beam capable of projecting up to 600 metres ahead
- Larger illuminated radiator grille
- Redesigned three-dimensional chrome star elements
- New rear LED tail lamps featuring signature three-star graphics
These revisions enhance both visual presence and nighttime visibility.
MB.OS Debuts in the New S-Class
The S 450 e introduces MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System), the brand’s next-generation software architecture that acts as the vehicle’s central computing platform.
Designed to connect all major vehicle functions into a unified ecosystem, MB.OS enables improved connectivity, enhanced intelligence, and future software-driven feature updates.
The system forms the foundation for a more personalized and connected luxury driving experience.
MBUX Superscreen and AI-Powered Virtual Assistant
Technology remains a major focus inside the cabin, with the S 450 e equipped with the latest MBUX Superscreen and next-generation MBUX infotainment system.
Technology Features
- AI-powered “Hey Mercedes” Virtual Assistant
- Natural language voice recognition
- Enhanced Zero Layer interface
- Google Maps-based MBUX Surround Navigation
- Advanced personalization capabilities
- Connected digital ecosystem
Mercedes-Benz says the latest interface is designed to create more intuitive and human-like interactions between occupants and the vehicle.
Ride Comfort Enhanced with Advanced Chassis Technology
The S-Class has long been recognized for ride quality, and the S 450 e continues that tradition with a suite of advanced comfort-focused technologies.
AIRMATIC Air Suspension
Standard AIRMATIC air suspension continuously adjusts damping and ride characteristics based on road conditions, helping deliver a refined ride experience.
Rear-Axle Steering
The sedan comes standard with 4.5-degree rear-axle steering, while an optional 10-degree system can further improve low-speed maneuverability by reducing the turning circle by nearly two metres.
This can be particularly beneficial when navigating tight parking spaces, hotel entrances, and crowded urban environments.
Predictive Suspension Using Car-to-X Technology
Through Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud connectivity, the vehicle can receive road-condition data shared by other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This allows the suspension system to proactively prepare for speed bumps and road imperfections before the vehicle reaches them.
Safety Remains a Core Strength
The new Mercedes-Benz S 450 e continues the S-Class legacy of prioritizing occupant protection through a comprehensive suite of safety technologies.
Safety Features Include:
- Enhanced adaptive restraint system
- PRE-SAFE® Impulse belt pretensioners
- Up to 15 airbags
- Intelligent protection systems for all seating positions
- Advanced occupant safety architecture
These technologies are designed to improve protection during a wide range of driving situations and potential collision scenarios.
